Woman of the week: Maryam Mirzakhani

Nothing is impossible, boundaries and barriers can’t stop a woman from its passion and achievements. This week we will look at Maryam Mirzakhani which is the women of the week. She passed away on July 14 at the age of 40, but what she left behind is unforgettable. Maryam was born in Iran and she was among the families that really got affected by the revolution in 1979 in Iran and also, she survived during the eight years of the Iran-Iraq war. Despite all the difficult conditions that she was facing it didn’t stop her from progressing and working. When she was a student, she received two gold medals in the international Math Olympiad of Iran which is a record! Later, she received her bachelor’s degree from Sharif university of Technology in Tehran. After that she went to study for a PHD at Harvard University, in the meantime the relations and conditions between Iran and United states was very problematic and tough. In her thesis she solved a central problem about curves on Riemann surface, a subject with a 150- year pedigree. After her extraordinary thesis she became a faculty member at Stanford university. In 2014 she was recognized with the fields medal which is the highest- ranking and most important award in mathematics for her hard work on hyperbolic geometry. She was known as “a hall of fame which illustrated” which points out her hard work, patience, preservice towards achieving success. While she was honored, she started to begin a battle with cancer and unfortunately, she lost the fight and passed away. She will always be remembered because of her characteristic and the legacy she left behind. She is a model for so many women around the globe, showing noting is impossible and being a women and hard sanctions can’t stop a woman from its achievement. The key for her success was hard work and patience.
