Woman of the week: Kamala Harris

Only few others have been in the limelight this week as much as Senator Kamala Harris. This week, we’ll take a look at her pathway into to politics and how she has shaped the current election in the US. Her sympathetic personality and fervent dedication to facilitating positive change on numerous fronts has landed her a pivotal position in her career and our futures.

On January 21st, 2019, Harris made global headlines when she announced her candidacy for the presidential primaries in the United States. She has been present in US politics since 2004, when she became the 27th District Attorney for San Francisco, and she has since worked her way to her position as U.S. Senator of California –– a position she still holds today. But Harris isn’t only making headlines due to her political credibility and reassuring personality; her nomination as the first black, Asian-American woman on the U.S. vice-presidential ticket has magnified her impact as a role model to other women and young girls. She holds a degree in political science and economics after which she also passed the legal bar exam. Throughout her career, she has kept in touch with her values by advocating for legislation to facilitate progressive social change through prosecuting sexual abuse cases, protecting women’s reproductive rights and refusing same-sex marriage bans.

As we await the result of the U.S. presidential election, we can do nothing but hope that we are granted the chance to have Vice President Kamala Harris as the forefront of one the most influential countries in the world. We can do nothing but hope that we are granted the opportunity to watch her flourish in that political environment and to learn from her incredible personality, professionalism and presence so we can reach our full potential too.
