Did you know that every 11 seconds, a girl undergoes Female Genital Cutting (FGC)?
FGC involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. This physical but also sexual abuse is mostly undergone on little girls – and this because of different religious beliefs and cultural justifications.
Contrary to what most people think, female genital cutting doesn’t only happen in Africa or in Muslims communities. It happens everywhere, even in the most developed and democratic countries. In Europe alone, 600 000 girls are survivors of FGC, of which 20% in France !
You can imagine how traumatizing and violent this cutting is to all the girls who had to go through it. It involves diverse psychological and physical scars, which they have to live with, for the rest of their lives.
In order to raise awareness and to discuss more this alarming phenomenon, we are honored to host our very first event on “Female Genital Cutting”, in collaboration with the organization Sahiyo, whose aim is to end FGC in Asian communities worldwide.
During this event, we will have the pleasure to hear Sahiyo’s CEO Mariya Taher, along with two other members of the association: Cate Cox and Lara Kingstone. We are very grateful to get the opportunity to understand better and discuss more FGC, and this with people specialized in the subject and fighting everyday against it. You will also have the chance to hear different testimonies of women who have undergone FGC and to freely debate at the end.
If you also feel concerned about FGC or want to learn more on what you can do about it, join us !
Online, on February 2nd, at 5:15pm (Berlin time).
